Caffeine

ATTENTION TO ALL THE MILLENIALS OUT THERE!

Do you often find yourself spacing out or even snoozing off for that matter in class? If your answer is yes, no need to worry, this is completely normal! As students of middle and high school, you kids have so much to worry about such as, getting good grades, keeping up with extra-curricular or after school activities, and so on. This is why I am suggesting that you consider drinking caffeinated drinks! Whether this drink may be an energy drink such as red bull, or as simple as coffee, it could be beneficial for you as long as you are responsible with the amount that you are intaking.
If taken in appropriate doses, not only can caffeine aid in ones’ mental health and awareness, but it can improve headaches as well as it works by stimulating your central nervous system, heart, muscles, and the centers that control blood pressure. Cool right? Now, I know what you’re probably thinking, “how much is too much?” It was found that 57 mg/kg via iv doses and 18-50g if taken orally were found to be fatal. It was also discovered that in one five years old patient, approximately three grams of caffeine killed him. This goes to show, it is very important that you consider how much caffeine you are consuming.
Did you know that Guarana, which contains caffeine, is a medical plant native to Brazil? Caffeine can also be found in plants such as yerba mate, and other plants that are used to make tea. Guarana though, is very rare in Canada. It’s famously known as the caffeine plant because its seeds contain various medical components such as caffeine. The coolest thing about this plant is that the seeds contain twice the amount of caffeine that coffee contains…like what?!? Interesting right? This should also be another reason why one should be responsible with and consider how much caffeine they are consuming, as too much can lead to either very mild symptoms such as, headaches or vomiting to say a few, or to very acute symptoms such as, GI pain, insomnia, etc.
